Artists Against Breast Cancer

A community outreach program for breast cancer prevention and early detection

We are organizing a community outreach program to promote awareness of breast cancer early detection and prevention methods, and encourage more women to get screened for breast cancer.

The program represents a collaboration among the South Carolina Cancer Center (a partnership between the University of South Carolina and Palmetto Health) Claflin University and the South Carolina Multicultural Arts Center, and is funded in part by grants from the USC School of Medicine and the University of South Carolina Office of Research and Health Sciences.

The program began with a call to target college students and community members in the areas served by the two Universities, asking anyone who has experienced breast cancer in his/her family to come forward and produce a work of art inspired by that experience. These could be visual art works, computer graphics,  literary works, etc.  Participation in the program implies that we have permission to display, reproduce and use the art works for the purpose of promoting breast cancer awareness. Participants can choose to place their names on the art work, or submit it anonymously.

The works of art will be on display at various locations in Columbia and Orangeburg, SC and information about breast cancer prevention and research will be provided at the same time.

We will display the works of art we receive, as possible, on this web site.

The works of art will also be placed on display at two or three community centers in Columbia, during an evening of music, dance and art. Here, we hope that a community art project, such as a quilt or a painting, will be produced. We will have an informal reception and an open forum on breast cancer prevention and early detection, to provide an opportunity for people to come together and learn more about what can be done to prevent breast cancer, and share their feelings and concerns about the disease.
